Connect the Chelsea Creek waterfront and Chelsea Greenway to the Mary Ellen Welch Greenway

Avatar: Boston Planning Department Boston Planning Department
"In September 2023, the City of Boston and City of Chelsea prepared a joint application for $2,500,000 in funding from the Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods Grant Program. This Federal grant program funds projects that eliminiate [sic] or mitigate community barriers caused by highways, rail lines, or other transportation infrastructure. The Cities applied for planning and design funding for the Greening the Chelsea Creek Waterfront Project. Both waterfront communities are on the front lines of climate change and, despite their proximity, feel disconnected from one another because of physical divisions from an elevated expressway, a freight bypass road, former rail rights-of-way, and industrial dominated streets and land uses. ... The United States Department of Transportation, which adminsiters [sic] this grant program, will communicate funding decisions in 2024. If funds are awarded, this planning and design project is anticipated to be completed within 24 months, concluding no later than September 30, 2026." (Source: "PLAN: East Boston," pg 110)
